How to watch Italian TV abroad

Every realistic way to watch Italian TV outside Italy, plus time zones, internet speed and family setup tips.

Living outside Italy doesn’t mean giving up the evening news, Sunday football or Italian cartoons for the kids. If you want to watch Italian TV abroad, you have more options today than ever, but they are not all equal. This guide compares every realistic route, then covers the practical side: time zones from New York to Sydney, the internet speed you need, paying in euros from another currency and setting up a TV the whole family can use.

Your options at a glance

Option What you get Main drawback
International TV packages One or two Italian channels inside a local bundle Very limited choice, often with a contract
Official broadcaster apps and websites Selected programmes from individual channels Many programmes are restricted to viewers in Italy
Satellite dish Many Italian channels in Europe Needs a large, well-aimed dish; impractical outside Europe
Italian IPTV subscription All channel categories plus on-demand films and series, on any device Depends on a stable internet connection

For most Italians abroad, and for anyone who loves Italian television, an IPTV subscription is the most complete and practical choice. The rest of this guide explains how to make it work well wherever you live.

Why satellite rarely works outside Europe

Every satellite covers a specific area, called its footprint. Across central and southern Europe, Italian channels can be received with a normal-sized dish. The farther you go, the bigger the dish you need, and in the Americas or Australia direct reception of European satellites is practically impossible. Renters and apartment owners also face rules about mounting dishes on balconies or walls. IPTV avoids all of this: the signal travels over the internet, so New York, Buenos Aires and Sydney work just like Milan.

Time zones: when to watch what

Where you live Difference from Italy The 8 pm news arrives at…
UK, Ireland, Portugal −1 hour 7 pm
New York, Toronto, Montréal −6 hours (−5 for a few weeks in March and late October) 2 pm
Chicago −7 hours 1 pm
Los Angeles, Vancouver −9 hours 11 am
Buenos Aires, São Paulo −4 or −5 hours, depending on the season 3–4 pm
Dubai +2 or +3 hours 10–11 pm
Sydney, Melbourne +8 to +10 hours, depending on the season 4–6 am the next day

In North America, Italian prime time falls in the afternoon: perfect for retirees or anyone working from home. In Australia, the evening live broadcast arrives at dawn, so the on-demand catalogue and reminder features in your app become much more useful. Always set your device to your local time zone; the TV guide converts programme times automatically.

Internet speed you need

The reference figures are the same everywhere: about 10 Mbps per screen for HD, 15–25 Mbps for Full HD and at least 25 Mbps for 4K content. If several screens watch at once, add the numbers together. Stability matters more than headline speed: a steady 30 Mbps connection beats one that swings between 5 and 100 every evening.

  • Fibre and cable are ideal, even for several screens.
  • DSL works well for one or two screens in HD or Full HD.
  • Mobile and satellite internet work too, but with more variation: choose the HD version of channels.
  • Test in the evening, when you will actually watch, with a device connected by cable to the router.

Paying in euros from another currency

Our prices are in euros. If you live in the eurozone, you pay exactly the amount shown. Elsewhere your bank converts the payment into your local currency; under each price we show an approximate amount in US dollars and Swiss francs, but the final figure depends on the day’s exchange rate and any card fees. Two tips:

  • check whether your card charges a foreign transaction fee: many travel-friendly cards don’t;
  • if you are offered the choice to pay “in your own currency” at checkout, paying in euros and letting your bank convert is usually cheaper.

Devices bought abroad work the same

Smart TVs, Android boxes, phones and tablets sold in the US, Canada, the UK or Australia work exactly like those sold in Italy: the IPTV apps are the same, and menus can usually be switched to Italian. Just check the time zone and that the device has the latest software. If you’re unsure which app suits your model, message us on WhatsApp and we will recommend one. Step-by-step guides for every device are on our setup page.

Italian TV as a family resource

For many families abroad, Italian TV is more than entertainment:

  • Keeping the language alive. Children growing up in another country pick up Italian naturally from cartoons and kids’ programmes.
  • Staying connected. Watching the same shows as grandparents in Italy gives you something to talk about on the next video call.
  • Comfort for older relatives. Parents who moved abroad to be near their children feel at home with the programmes they have always watched.
  • Following the news. Staying informed about Italian current affairs, including elections in which citizens abroad can vote.

A practical tip: create different favourites on each device. The kids get only their channels on the tablet; grandparents find the main channels first on the living-room TV.

Travelling and second homes

Your subscription travels with you: install the app on your phone or pack the box. Outside your home country, watch out for mobile roaming charges and use Wi-Fi where possible. If you split your time between Italy and another country, you can use the same subscription in both homes, within the number of screens your plan allows.

What about the law?

Copyright rules differ from country to country, and whether a particular service is lawful depends on its content and on the provider’s rights. We explain this neutrally in our legal FAQ. This is general information, not legal advice; for your own situation, a local lawyer is the right person to ask.

Support across time zones

Our support team works on WhatsApp on Italian time. If you are many hours away, message us whenever it suits you: you will usually find the answer when you wake up, and for setup help we can agree on a time that works for both of us.
